Estonia Plans New Defensive Bunkers Near Russian Border
About 100 of the planned structures will be built on state-owned property, while the remaining 50 are expected to be located on privately owned or municipal land, according to reports.
Herem did not disclose further information about the bunkers’ specifications or their intended operational purposes.
The initiative comes as Baltic countries expand their military capabilities and improve civilian preparedness amid mounting regional security concerns.
NATO officials have raised concerns about Russian drone incursions, violations of national airspace, sabotage and other forms of hybrid activity across the region. European countries have also been reinforcing their air defense systems in response to emerging threats.
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO strengthened its eastern flank by deploying additional troops and developing plans for rapid military responses.
Earlier this month, Estonia’s military announced plans to permanently move a combat-ready brigade closer to the Russian border.
The 1st Brigade is expected to relocate to an expanded military base situated less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the border. The move is intended to improve Estonia’s capacity to respond to a potential Russian attack.
