Baltic nation’s army says unknown drone was shot down near US base

(MENAFN) An unidentified drone was downed near a U.S. military installation in southeastern Estonia, not far from the Russian border, the country’s armed forces confirmed.

The incident took place at Camp Reedo, which currently hosts the 5th Squadron of the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry Regiment. The unit was deployed to Estonia in February to replace troops from the 30th Infantry Regiment.

“Allies detected drones flying in the immediate vicinity of the 2nd Infantry Brigade campus at 4:30 p.m. on October 17, one of which was brought down using an anti-drone rifle,” said Estonian Defense Forces spokeswoman Liis Vaksmann. She noted that the drone had not yet been recovered.

The episode comes amid rising aerial security concerns along NATO’s eastern borders. The alliance recently deployed additional fighter aircraft to the region following allegations from Poland that Russian drones violated its airspace on September 9. A week later, Polish authorities detained two Belarusian nationals accused of flying a drone over government facilities in Warsaw. Moscow denied any connection to either event.

Estonia also reported on September 19 that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered its airspace for over ten minutes. Russia’s Defense Ministry, however, insisted that the flight “was carried out in strict accordance with international law and did not violate the borders of any country.”
